When you want to have people round to the house for a party, b-b-q, business dinner or a family gathering you always want to present your food as well as possible. Especially when it is a business dinner etc it is not enough
for the food to taste like it was prepared by the finest chefs but it is also important for it to visually look stunning as if it was a work of art. So when a course whether it be an appetizer or a main course it takes pride of place as
a centre piece for people to marvel at and for you to take all the compliments.
One of the many ways to do this is with food carving. Carving of food make a great centre piece, can used to set a theme for any meal, is easy to work with because, in general, the food used will be soft and workable, and of
course it is all edible. The one piece of food I would reccommend is melon. Melon is soft to work with, has a good size to make a proud statement display and comes in various attractive colours.
It goes without saying that the tool you use are of great importance. Any knives use should be sharp so to leave clean, defined lines, and also try to use untensil to keep your subject steady and in place so it is not handled
any more than it should be in case it is finally eaten. This art of friut carving is as popular today as ever and goes back a long way especially in Asian countries where it has been an art form for many years.
Melon carvings can be as spectacular as you wish and can be the centre piece of any dinner party, as a matter of fact there is even competitions to show off these talents to win recognition for these skills and win awards.
With such a workable raw material the results are endless from, animals, house utensils, or just quirky designs that will draw attention to your efforts. I have seen carving done of fish where the rind has been peeled back to be
used as scales and fins, and I have also seen a water melon sculpted into a whicker type basket and filled with other fruit and presented as a buffet appetizer for dinner guests to help themselves.
Watermelon carving can be a great fun with the kids too. In fact, being an excellent source of vitamins and a tasty fruit, but too often children are to inclined not to eat enough fruit and eat chocolate or crisps. By creating their
favourite characters or shapes they will become interested in good healthy food and will eat what you want them to without the heartache of arguing with them.
